Small Fatigue Cracks: A Statement of the Problem and Potential Solutions
نویسنده
چکیده
The current status o f the problem of small cracks in fatigue is presented. Several classes o f small cracks are distinguished, and their individual characteristics described. Specifically, for cracks small compared with microstructural size scales, for cracks small compared with the ex tent o f local plasticity or for cracks which are either chemically or physically small (e.g. about 1 mm or less), comments are made on the origins o f differences in behavior between large and small cracks, on the question o f the "driving force" for small crack advance and on the possible existence o f intrinsic thresholds for crack growth. Finally, some thoughts are offered on the use o f smallcrack methodology in life prediction analyses and in alloy design.

FATIGUE BEHAVIOUR OFA ROLLED AZ31 MAGNESIUM ALLOYS PREPARED BY EPAND BB CONDITIONS
Abstract: Rotating bending fatigue tests have been performed using smooth specimens of a rolled AZ31 magnesium alloy in laboratory air at ambient temperature. Fatigue strength and characteristic was evaluated and fracture mechanism was discussed on the basis fracture surface analysis. Electrical polishing (EP) as well as deep rolling (ball burnishing (BB)) U-notched specimens were performed on ...
متن کاملThe Dc Electrical Potential Method for the Measumment of Fretting Cracks
As fretting fatigue cracks are initiated at an early stage of life, the fretting fracture process is dominated by the stable growth of cracks. Hence the measurement of crack length is very important. This paper demonstrates the suitability of the DC potential drop technique for the measurement of fretting cracks. A calibration has been established for monitoring crack growth in BS L65 copper al...
متن کاملCalculating Stress Intensity Factor for Small Edge Radial Cracks on an Orthotropic Thick-walled Cylinder Subjected to Internal Pressure using the Average Stress
In this paper, the problem of calculating the stress intensity factor (SIF) for an orthotropic thick-walled cylinder with a small radial crack subject to internal pressure is considered. The crack is assumed to be an edge crack on the external radius of the cylinder. The stress intensity factor is calculated by superposition of an uncracked cylinder with uniform stress distribution and a cylind...

Statement of Problem: Bleaching materials are able to change the surface morphology as well as mineral and organic content of tooth structure. Considering that bleaching is done for aesthetic purpose, awareness of the possible effect of these materials on hard tissue is important, because it may affect the restorative treatments. Purpose: The aim of this study was comparing the effect of two bl...
متن کاملStress intensity factor at the hole-edge cracks tips in a finite plate
In the current research work, the problem of fracture mechanics in a plate with a central hole under tensile loading is studied. The stress intensity factors are calculated for a finite plate containing two symmetrical hole-edge cracks. The problem is solved by two different methods, namely the finite element method and the FRANC software analysis. At first the finite element method is used and...
